Incidentally, the more I research and learn, the more I think "DJ" may be a bit of an overstatement of what I do. For requests that I don't have I could just pause the music player and play it from a streaming service or youtube. Its not quite as slick, but one idea I have is to just run a music player as my main source for the PA, and then use an external sound card with a different player for pre-cueing. The needs listed above are within the capabilities of most music players, so the two big things I was hoping to find were some way to integrate a streaming service in order to facilitate playing requests, and pre-cueing. Foobar2000, Clementine, and BeeMusic have been recommended to me by several people. Song normalization is also pretty important. Honestly, all I really need is a music player that makes sorting and creating playlists as easy as possible, as well as allows me to edit one while its playing. Pretty much all of the DJ programs I have tried could definitely be used, but they have a lot of features I don't need and they aren't really designed for my situation.

Since all of the songs I play are from the same genre (country), the rhythm pattern is the most important factor in distinguishing between dance types.Īfter doing more research it sounds like there may not be software that has everything I would like. For almost all of the partner dances I play that don't go with a specific song I use songs from my playlist folders, which I have sorted by dance style. BPM and key are not a big concern for me, simply because 95% of the requests I get are for line dance songs. Thank you for the suggestion UpAndUp! I will look into it, however I think ralf may be right in my case.

Automatically count and display BPM of each song A way to remotely control the player, or at least see what is up next The ability to automatically generate playlists based on a rotation of dance type

The ability show show a "up next" list of dance types which could be displayed on a separate screen A cuing option that would allow me to listen to a song through a set of headphones from a second deck* Ability to add songs to a playlist from a streaming service in order to be able to fulfill requests without having to buy each one* The ones with stars are the most important. However, here is a list of features that, while not absolutely crucial, I would really like to have.

I know all those features are available with iTunes. Smart playlists that automatically add songs to folders based off of dance type tag The ability to move tracks around and add or delete tracks while the playlist is playing without interrupting playback The ability to tag and sort songs by dance type, and to display this tag in the playlist so I could see what dance is up next Here are the features I would have to have: So my question is this: Have you all found good alternatives to iTunes? A search of the internet does not yield much help in the field of music playing software for social dances, all of the results being aimed at club-type DJ's. Both of those programs leave something to be desired. I have actually used spotify quite a bit as well. Pretty much everyone I know who DJ's for social dance uses iTunes. Regardless of dance style however, the features of a good music playing software are the same. I also am a teaching assistant for several of the social dance classes offered at my university. I also generally DJ for country-western dances. I mostly DJ at school dances and at western bars, though not exclusively. I started DJing for social dances last year, and I am still looking for some software that works well for it.
